Guqin Music "High Mountains and Flowing Water"

As an ancient traditional instrument of the Chinese nation, the guqin adopts the five tone modes, namely "Gong, Shang, Jiao, Zheng, and Yu". The sound of the qin is clear, elegant, ancient and melodious. It can not only be used as a musical instrument for people to appreciate and express emotions, but also can be used as music therapy. It has the saying that "the five tones are for the five organs", and ancient emperors valued guqin music even more.

Throughout history, there are countless literatures and poems related to the guqin. It is mentioned multiple times in the Book of Songs, such as "A graceful lady always has friends of the qin and se", "When the qin and se are in the palace, everything is quiet and good". It is not difficult to see that the ancient qin was already loved by people at that time. The Guqin has a long history, and what we introduce today is one of the top ten famous pieces of Guqin "High Mountains and Flowing Water.". This song was originally a single piece, and its score first appeared in Zhu Quancheng's "Magical Secret Score" during the Ming Dynasty. After the Tang Dynasty, it was divided into two independent qin pieces: "High Mountain" and "Flowing Water". After the Mingqing Dynasties, with the continuous development of the art of guqin, people's initial aspiration for music was gradually switched from the high mountains to the flowing water.

When playing, the melody fluctuates relatively smoothly. From high mountains to flowing water, it comes gradually and slowly. Its ever-changing fingering, wide sound range, and continuous jumping of sound areas fully showcase the grandeur of high mountains and the unpredictable changes of flowing water!

The story behind this song is also heartbreaking! It is said that during the Spring and Autumn Period and the Three Kindoms Period, Bo Ya, the guqin player, played in the wild mountains. When Zhong Ziqi, the woodcutter, passed by, he was able to understand the "Like Mountain Tai, Like Long River" in the sound of Bo Ya's guqin. Boya exclaimed in surprise, "It's great that your heart is the same as mine." The two of them regretted meeting too late and agreed to meet here during the Mid Autumn Festival of the following year. But Zhong Ziqi unfortunately fell ill and passed away. Before his death, he hoped to build his tomb by the river so that on August 15th, he could hear the sound of Boya's guqin. Boya was deeply saddened when he found out that, and after playing "High Mountains and Flowing Water" in front of Zhong Ziqi's tomb, he smashed his beloved guqin to pieces and never played the guqin again in his lifetime.

For thousands of years, "High Mountains and Flowing Water" has been passed down along with the story of Boya and Zhong Ziqi. This song also praises the emotions of finding and cherishing close friends, reminding people that life is short and close friends are hard to find. They should cherish the time they meet and spend with friends. It also indirectly demonstrates the brilliance of the music. The Guqin piece "High Mountains and Flowing Water" is a gentle and lyrical piece that embodies emotions in the scenery. Through the sound of the guqin, it depicts towering mountains and murmuring water, expressing people's yearning for freedom, unrestrained and open-minded life.
